Hartsville, S.C. — The Coker College Performing Arts Series presents The Enchantment Theatre Company’s production of the fairy tale “Pinocchio” on Friday, January 27 at 7 p.m. in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center.

The Enchantment Theatre Company retells the beloved story of the boisterous puppet who wants to be a boy by weaving together physical theater, masks, puppetry, magic and original music. Written in 1882 by Carolo Collodi, “Pinocchio” features some of the most recognizable characters in children’s literature, including Gepetto, the Fox and the Cat, the Blue Fairy, and the little wooden boy whose nose grows when he tells a lie.

“As Pinocchio approaches becoming a real boy, all of the issues of being moral, ethical and civilized are brought into bold relief,” said Leslie Reidel, the play’s director and a professor of theater at the University of Delaware. “Through the magic of live performance, audience and actors create what it is to be a responsible human being in the world.”

Based in Philadelphia, Enchantment Theatre has been producing imaginative, high quality family theater for over 25 years. Hundreds of thousands of children around the world have been thrilled and delighted at its adaptations of well-known fairy tales, including “The Snow Queen” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Critics have praised Enchantment Theatre productions for their visual beauty, incandescence, eloquence and eye-popping special effects.

Enchantment Theatre has given performances at the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center, and at the International Children’s Theater Festival in Philadelphia. The company has also toured the Far East four times, including performances in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

“We’re always trying to stretch our imaginations and those of our audience,” said executive director Jennifer Smith, who founded The Enchantment Theatre Company with her husband, Landis Smith, in 1979. “We believe that theater for children should be just as well-conceived and well-produced as theater for adults. Pinocchio is our most innovative and challenging production to date.”
