Hartville, S.C. — Coker College will show “A Man Named Pearl,”the award-winning documentary about self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar of Bishopville, S.C., on Tuesday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the college’s Watson Theater. Fryar is the artist-in-residence at Coker College and the film’s screening is part of the college’s year-long centennial celebration. Admission is free and a reception will follow the conclusion of the film.

Upbeat and uplifting, “A Man Named Pearl” shows what one person can achieve when he shares the full expression of his humanity and does not let obstacles determine his path in life. “A Man Named Pearl” won the Crystal Heart and the Audience Choice awards at the 2006 Heartland Film Festival in Indianapolis. Produced and directed by Scott Galloway and Brent Pierson, the film was shot in Bishopville, Hartsville and Columbia in 2005.

Hailed by critics, “A Man Named Pearl” has been shown in movie theaters around the country. The Coker College screening, however, is the first time the documentary is being shown in Hartsville.

Fryar began creating his three-acre topiary garden at his home near I-20 in Bishopville in 1984 to win "Yard of the Month." That yard is now a state treasure that attracts visitors from throughout world.

The well-manicured, sculptured plant forms that are Fryar's living vision of peace, love and goodwill frequently began as salvaged seedlings from a local nursery. Recognized by art and botanical enthusiasts alike, the visually whimsical garden is maintained year-round by Fryar to educate and inspire others to achieve their creative potential. Fryar has also created a topiary garden on the campus of Coker College

Throughout 2008, Coker College is marking its centennial with a series of events celebrating the Coker experience. For more information, call 843-383-8018 or visit www.coker.edu/100.
