South Carolina’s Musical Ambassadors

Palmetto Mastersingers
to Perform
at Coker on February 24

Hartsville, SC — The Palmetto Mastersingers will perform a concert at Coker College on Tuesday, February 24 at 8 p.m. in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center.

An all-male chorus of 81 singers based in Columbia, SC, the Palmetto Mastersingers have sung at the White House, Carnegie Hall, the National Cathedral, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The group was founded in 1986 by the late Dr. Arpad Darazs, director of choral studies at the University of South Carolina.

Known as South Carolina’s Musical Ambassadors, the Palmetto Mastersingers perform under the musical direction of Dr. Walter Cuttino, a voice professor at the University of South Carolina. Cuttino completed his graduate studies at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and before returning to South Carolina, he pursued a career in Europe where he gave over 1,000 operatic performances and 350 concerts, including a tour with the late Leonard Bernstein to London and Moscow.

For their Coker concert, the Palmetto Mastersingers will perform 19 songs ranging from classical spirituals, such as Beethoven’s “Hallelujah Chorus”, traditional American spirituals, like “Go Down, Moses,” and 20th century works such as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Nothing Like a Dame” and “Unchained Medley” by Hy Zaret and Alex North.

The Coker Singers, the official choral ensemble of Coker College directed by Dr. William Carswell, will guest perform with the Palmetto Mastersinger on two pieces: “Soon-Ah Will Be Done” by William Dawson and “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place” from “Requiem” by Johannes Brahms.
