Hartsville, S.C. — A new book by Coker College education professor Sara Odom guides prospective teachers through the state’s certification process.

“Becoming a Teacher in South Carolina” (Thomson, 2006, 84 pages, ISBN 0-759-39177-7) contains a wide range of information on topics that are important for the development of the well-educated teacher. Chapters include “Perspectives on Teaching,” “The College Academic Career,” “Certification,” and “Employment Opportunities.” It is also written to be a resource for veteran teachers and teacher education programs at colleges and universities.

Odom has over 27 years of public school teaching experience in grades K-8 in Connecticut, Florida, South Carolina and Virginia. In 2000, she joined the faculty of Coker College where she teaches reading methods classes and supervises student teachers.
