Hartsville, S.C. — Coker College Theater presents the John Steinbeck classic "Of Mice and Men" at 8 p.m. from Thursday, October 19 to Saturday, October 21 in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center. Admission at the door is $6 for adults, $3 for children under 18 and students, and free with Coker College ID. The play tells the story of the complex bond between two migrant laborers, George and the mentally challenged Lennie, and what they encounter while working on a ranch. The characters George and Lennie and played by brothers Justin and Adam Johnson of Loris. “The play has universal issues that are as relevant today as when the book was first published,” said director Deborah Bloodworth, associate professor of theater. “For example, society doesn’t really have an answer for what to do with those who don’t fit in or live by the rules.” The exploration of heterosexual male bonding, in light of the successful 2005 film “Brokeback Mountain,” and the deferment of dreams also drew Bloodworth to the play. Coker’s “Of Mice and Men” stars students Josh Lindorf as Candy, Robert O’Hara as Boss, Cody Smith as Slim, Wes Atkinson as Carlson, and Adam Winstead as Curley. Curley’s wife is played by Kayla Watts, Daniel Neville plays Whit and Josh McKenny is Crooks. The set and lighting is designed by Tim Baumgartner, assistant professor of theater. Students behind the scenes are costume designer Corinne Musgrove, stage manager Christine White, assistant stage manager Rose Forman, and props manager Trevor Robinson. -30- October 11 , 2006 |
