Hartsville, S.C. — Coker College is waiving normal admissions requirements for college students whose education has been interrupted by Hurricane Katrina.

As long as they have proof of enrollment, such as a valid student ID, financial aid data or a grade report, students from Gulf Coast institutions shut down by Katrina will receive automatic admission to Coker College. Coker also has a limited amount of residence hall space to accommodate displaced students who enroll on the board plan.

“Katrina’s legacy of destruction should not include derailing the college education of thousands of students,” said Coker College President Dr. Jim Dawson. “We want them to know that our admissions and financial aid staff will work with them to keep their college careers on track.”

Since day classes are already underway, eligible students will be allowed to enroll in evening classes at Coker on a special acceptance. This includes classes at the college’s main campus in Hartsville, S.C, and at its other evening program sites in Mullins, S.C., Lake City, S.C., and at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Coker will also provide independent study opportunities as needed.

“We hope that these students will be able to return to their home institutions,” said Dawson, “but should that not be possible, we are working on a special scholarship program for the spring semester.”
