COKER COLLEGE
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Hartsville, S.C. — Hartsville resident Joan Hoffmeyer is the recipient of the Coker College Alumni Association’s 2005 Distinguished Service Award. She received the award during an Alumni Day ceremony on April 9.

“Joan has been a terrific ambassador and volunteer for Coker College for over 50 years,” said Dr. Jim Dawson, president of the college. “Not only is she most deserving of this recognition, we hope that she will continue to be one of the college's most ardent supporters and a role model for future alumni.”

A 1951 Coker graduate, Hoffmeyer has served as a member of Coker College’s Board of Visitors and for many years she was her class’s representative to the alumni association. She is a past chair of the alumni association’s special events committee and she serves on the reunion committee.

Retired since 1989, Hoffmeyer was an accomplished educator in the Darlington County school system where she was instrumental in placing high school students in part-time jobs. In 1980, she was named top vocational teacher in the district. Following retirement, she continued to serve as a mentor in vocational education.

Hoffmeyer is active in her church and has served as a Sunday School teacher. She is a member of numerous bridge and garden clubs as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution and the French Huguenots Society. Her granddaughter, Courtney Smith, is a 2003 graduate of Coker College.

The Coker College Alumni Association also extended special recognition to Hoffmeyer’s husband, Gus, for his support of her service activities and work for the college.
