Hartsville, SC – Coker
College recognized the academic achievements of its student athletes at
the school’s fifth annual Academic Honors Banquet held at the Hartsville
Country Club Thursday night. Senior Shamae Hemingway won the main honor
of the evening, Coker’s Academic Athlete of the Year award.
Hemingway, a member of the women’s basketball team, excelled both in the
classroom and on the basketball court. She maintains a 3.75 overall GPA
and in her major of Physical Education, Hemingway has a 3.95 GPA. Hemingway
has been involved in 14 various campus committees and organizations, including
the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, the American Heart Association,
and Habitat for Humanity.
The Conway, SC, native will also go down as one of the top players to
ever come through Coker’s women’s basketball program. At Coker, Hemingway
has been named team MVP and team captain, and won the C.G. Timberlake
Athlete of the Year award last year. She earned CVAC Player of the Week
honors on two occasions, earned 1st Team All-CVAC and Honorable Mention,
and was named to the CVAC All Tournament Team in Coker’s run to the finals
last year.
In the last month of the 2004-05 season, Hemingway etched her name in
Coker’s record book, taking over 1st place on the career scoring and rebounding
lists. She totaled 1,437 points and 939 rebounds during her time at Coker,
surpassing records which had stood for nine and 19 years respectively.

of the men’s cross country team received his award for being named to
the NCAA II Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Tiffany
Wagoner, Jamie Clingan, and Amanda Shelton of the softball team earned
NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors as well for the 2003-04 academic
year.
Sixty-eight Cobra student athletes achieved a 3.25 or better semester
grade point average in Spring or Fall of 2004 and 17 of that group made
a 4.0 for the semester. Twenty-two student athletes earned Dean’s List
honors for maintaining a 3.75 or better semester GPA, and the College
recognized 12 athletes named to the CVC Academic All-Conference team.
The Athletic Team GPA Award went to the women’s tennis team, who achieved
a 3.249 team GPA during the Fall of 2004.
The Academic Honors Banquet is held in conjunction with the National Student-Athlete
Day, created 18 years ago and designed to honor student-athletes of all
ages who achieved excellence in academics and athletics.
