Hartsville, SC — The Coker College Alumni Association recently presented its 2005 Distinguished Achievement Award to artist and educator Dr. Donna Hammond Goodman of Florence.

“Dr. Goodman is an exemplary educator and an innovative artist,” said Coker College President Dr. Jim Dawson. “Her accomplishments and inspiring spirit are a source of pride for her undergraduate alma mater.”

Goodman, a professor at Francis Marion University, graduated from Coker College with a bachelor’s degree in art in 1973. She went on to earn a master’s degree and an education specialist degree from the University of South Carolina and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama.

The South Carolina Art Education Association twice named Goodman it’s Educator of the Year before recently recognizing her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. She is also on the board of the Florence Museum of Arts and Sciences, a member of Phi Kappa Phi, the national honorary education society, and she is a past member of the Coker College Board of Visitors.

In addition to teaching, Goodman is an award-winning artist who has participated in many international, national, and statewide exhibitions, including the juried Adobe Digital Imaging Competition, the World’s Women Online Exhibition at the United Nations Fourth World Conference in Beijing, and the annual International Photography Competition in Washington, DC. She has also had 12 solo exhibitions, several internet exhibitions, and she her work has been published numerous times.

Goodman has also been a visiting professor of art at Burren College of Art in Ireland, at North Carolina State University, at Loyola University in New Orleans, and at Clemson University.
