Cathleen G. Cuppett, Ph.D. - Associate Professor of Spanish

  • Presented “Mary Magdalene and the Walnut Tree: San Manuel Bueno, mártir's 19th-century Roots" at the 2005 Kentucky Foreign Language Conference. This paper was converted into and article and submitted to Decimonónica (on-line refereed journal) for publication.
  • Attended the first South Carolina Hispanic/Latino Issues Conference sponsored by the South Carolina Commission on Minority Affairs in Columbia, SC.
  • Conducted sabbatical research on U.S. Latinos: posted at http://courses.coker.edu/ccuppett/USLatinos/
  • Wrote the script and lyrics for the annual children's Christmas musical at First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville – for the second year in a row.

William Carswell, D.M.A. - Assistant Professor of Music

  • Appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Columbia (S.C.) Choral Society.

Wanda Ebright, M.F.A - Assistant Professor of Dance

  • Named president of the South Carolina Dance Association (SCDA).
  • Presented movement and acting sessions at the South Carolina Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) convention.
  • Represented SCDA and SCAHPERD at Columbia College in October to inform higher education professionals about the new PE legislation and how it affects teacher training programs in health, PE, recreation and dance.
  • Represented SCDA in an Arts in Basic Curriculum conference at Winthrop University.
  • Serves on the S.C. Arts Commission's review panel for the Artist Touring Roster program, helping select quality dance educators for K-12 residencies.

Angella Gallo, M.F.A. - Assistant Professor of Dance

  • Performed at the Sumter Opera House with her Sapphire Moon Dance Company.

C. Timothy Griggs, M.A. - Associate Professor of Physical Education & Sport Studies

  • Appointed to the NCAA II Management Council.

Jean Grosser, M.F.A.- Professor of Art

  • Exhibited “Jean Grosser: Amnesty Project” at Louisiana College in Pineville, LA.

David McCracken, Ph.D.- Associate Professor of English

  • Published "Francis Phelan as a Postmodern Odysseus in William Kennedy's Ironweed" in the spring 2005 issue of Postscript.
  • Delivered a paper entitled "The Stereotyping of Echo Boomers in Tom Wolfe's I am Charlotte Simmons" at the Philological Association of the Carolinas Conference in Myrtle Beach.

Shirley McClerklin-Motley, Ph.D. candidate - Assistant Professor of Social Work

  • Presented “Domestic Violence and Community: Faith Based and Justice Response” at the S.C. Attorney General's Conference.

Sarah Rothstein, M.A. - Assistant Professor of Library Science

  • Presented "Taking Bibliographic Instruction to Our Users" at the S.C. Library Association Annual Conference, using Coker as the model.

Joe Rubinstein, Ph.D. - Professor of Education

  • Co-authored revisions to the 2007 edition of the widely used Pre-K through 6 mathematics textbook and teacher guide Real Math, published by McGraw Hill.

Frank L. Switzer, Ph.D.- Professor of Chemistry

  • Instrumental in establishing a tech-rich wireless classroom experience at Coker College.
  • Received an $8,000 grant from the Pittsburgh Conference of Memorial National Grants Program to study “Windows Compatibility for Coker College Spectrometers."
  • Attended “Radio Interferometry and the Very Large Array,” National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Socorro, NM.
  • Serve as alternate councilor and webmaster (www.sc-acs.org) for the American Chemical Society South Carolina Section.
  • Honored as the National Director of Archives and Webmaster, Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society (www.gammasigmaepsilon.org).
  • Directed the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) 2005 Fall Workshop at Coker

Dave Schmotzer, M.Ed. - Assistant Professor of Physical Education & Sport Studies

  • Conducted "College Baseball 101" seminar at Fielders Choice Instructional School in Cleveland, Oh.
  • Conducted Coaches Clinic at Gloveslinger Sports in Hartsville.

Michael Siegfried, Ph.D.- Professor of Sociology

  • Presented “W.E.B. Du Bois and the Sociological Conceptualization and Theoretical Discussion of Race" at the 2005 meeting of the American Sociological Association in Philadelphia.
