Hartsville, SC — Coker
College is commemorating 30 years of evening classes at Fort Jackson with
a luncheon for local dignitaries, and past and present students, faculty
and staff on Saturday, September 18 at 12 p.m. in the Fort Jackson Officers’
Club. The keynote speaker will be Dr. B. James Dawson, the 15th president
of Coker College.
“For three decades, Coker has had the honor of providing a college education
for the men and women at Fort Jackson,” said Dawson. “It is a privilege
for Coker to be a vital member of the base community, today and in the
year’s to come.”
Coker became the first college to offer a bachelor’s degree program at
Fort Jackson when it started classes in late 1973. The program’s first
full academic year concluded in fall 1974. Housed in Fort Jackson’s Education
Services Center, the program is part of the base’s voluntary education
services and has over 490 alumni. Coker’s current enrollment at Fort Jackson
is 115 adult students, who are pursuing degrees in business administration,
social work, and sociology (criminology), as well as a Bachelor of Social
Work.
Coker is a member of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges, which allows
for the opportunity for members of the armed forces to complete their
degrees while serving at far away locations as well as at Fort Jackson.
Coker currently has students in Kuwait, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Texas,
and Virginia. Coker College graduates are serving all over the world.
