Coker Hosting Earth Day Conference

Hartsville, S.C. — Coker College is holding an Earth Day conference on Saturday, April 21 from 1 to 6 p.m. in Davidson Hall. Experts will discuss a range of environmental issues including  global warming and alternative energy. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Earth Day is April 22.

The conference will begin with biology professors Patricia Lincoln of  Coker College and  David Lincoln of the University of South Carolina speaking on biodiversity and global warming. State senator Gerald Malloy of Hartsville will make opening remarks.

The opening session will be followed by a panel discussion on alternative energy with Dr. Terry Walker, Clemson University agricultural and biological engineering professor, Wendy Bell from the Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition, Joe James from the Biomass Council, and Dr John Weidner from the Sustainable Energy Institute. Coker College biology professor Joe Flaherty will moderate.

Three simultaneous workshops will follow the panel discussion. The wildlife workshop will include Lynn Quattro from the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, Laura Housh of Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, and Cary Chamblee of the Sierra Club. A workshop on air quality in the state will feature Brian Baxley and Buck Graham from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, Gudrin Thompson from the Southern Environmental Law Center, and Wendy Cave of the Coastal Conservation League. Representative from Sonoco Products Company, Wellman Industries, the Palmetto Sate Clean Fuels Coalition and the S.C. Biomass Council will lead a workshop on industry research and production
