Hartsville, S.C. – Biologist Dr. Dorian Houser of Santee, Ca., is the  recipient of the Coker College Alumni Association’s 2006 Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Houser, a 1992 Coker graduate, is one of the world’s leading experts in biomimetics, the design of products and services inspired by nature.

In 2000, Houser founded Biomimetica, Inc., a San Diego-based firm that provides guidance and expertise for government, academic and private sectors. Biomimetica conducts research in the fields of physiology, ecology, bio-acoustics, behavior and bio-inspired computational sciences. The company specializes in the study of marine mammal systems and has a history of research involving dolphins, porpoises, baleen whales, seals and sea lions.

Houser is also an associate professor of biology at Sonoma State University and an adjunct professor of psychology for the University of Southern Mississippi. Early in his career, he was a National Research Council Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Navy Marine Mammal Program in San Diego. He has also conducted research at The Baruch Institute in Georgetown, S.C., and at the University of South Carolina.

Houser has authored numerous articles for professional publications such as The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America and The Journal of Experimental Biology. He has also presented his work at a number of professional conferences in the United States and abroad.

Houser earned a B.A. with honors in biology from Coker and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is a graduate of Cheraw High School.
