Coker College Choirs Present Holiday Concerts

Hartsville, SC — The Coker Singers and the new Coker Chamber Singers are performing four holiday concerts in December. The ensembles will perform A Coker Christmas on Thursday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. in St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Darlington and on Sunday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. in West Hartsville Baptist Church. On December 5 at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., they will perform Christmas Lessons and Carols Service at Central United Methodist Church in Florence. Admission for the concerts is free and the public is invited to attend.

Accompanied by winds, brass, guitar and percussion for their holiday concerts, the Coker Singers and the Coker Chamber Singers will perform a variety of music and carols, including “Gloria” by Paul Basler, “And the Glory of the Lord” from Handel’s “Messiah,” “Christmas Cantata” by Daniel Pinkham, “Ave Maria” by Sergei Rachmaninoff, and “A Spotless Rose” by Herbert Howells. The concerts will also feature the ever-popular “Deck the Halls,” “Silent Night” and “Go Tell it On the Mountain.” The Coker Singers and the Coker Chamber Singers are directed by Dr. William Carswell, assistant professor of music.

Founded in 1908, the Coker Singers is the official choral performing organization of Coker College. In addition to local concerts, the Coker Singers have performed in Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, New Orleans, New York and throughout the Carolinas. Earlier this year, the Coker Singers sang at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, and in New York City at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Carnegie Hall.

The Coker Chamber Singers is the newest choral ensemble at Coker College. They are an auditioned choir of 14 singers that study and perform choral chamber works from all musical periods. This ensemble will be traveling with the Coker Singers for performances throughout the year.
