Hartsville, SC — Coker College Music presents a faculty piano recital by Dr. Stephen J. Carlson on Saturday, February 11 at 8 p.m. in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Hartsville Music Study Club. Carlson’s performance will include Beethoven’s “Andante Favori”, Brahms’ “Handel Variations”, Chopin’s F minor Ballade and a selection from Debussy. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. Carlson, an assistant professor of music, teaches piano, piano literature, piano pedagogy and music theory. A versatile soloist and chamber musician who has performed throughout the Midwest and Southeast, Carlson made his New York debut as a solo recitalist at Carnegie Hall in 2005. Carlson completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and pedagogy at the University of Iowa where he studied with Uriel Tsachor. He is also a graduate of the University of Illinois and Gustavus Adolphus College, where he studied with Ian Hobson and John McKay, respectively. Carlson has taught at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Gustavus Adolphus College and St. Joseph’s School of Music in St. Paul, Mn. He joined the Coker faculty in 2000. Founded on Friday, October 27 in 1905, the Hartsville Music Study Club is the second oldest club in South Carolina. It has supported music scholarship programs and camps, presented pianos to local schools, and upheld community arts. During World War II, the club collected over 1500 records for Veteran’s hospitals. Additionally, the Club has presented three National Federation of Music Clubs’ Young Artist Winners in concert at Coker College. Officers of the Hartville Music Study Club for 2005-2007 are Mrs. Bryan Blackwell, president; Mrs. Harold Bolden, vice president; Mrs. Dena E. Hucks, secretary; Mrs. Elbert L. Diggs, treasurer; and Ms. Pat Smith, board representative.
