Hartsville, SC — Coker College sophomore Alan Welch of Hartsville has been named Student of the Year by the South Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. The statewide honor is a first for a Coker College student.

Welch, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work degree in Coker College’s evening program, plans to focus his career on helping youth. He has worked in the past with the Darlington, Hartsville and Pineridge Rescue Squads, and he has conducted CPR instruction for American Red Cross with adults, infant child care workers as well as professional rescuers.

Welch has also served as a volunteer for Coker College’s annual social work conference and Teens in Focus conference. He was nominated for the award by Shirley McClerklin-Motley, assistant professor of social work at Coker, who also is a former Student of the Year award winner.
