Hartsville, S.C. — The Coker College Performing Arts Series presents Rooms, an evocative theatrical work by Alban Elved Dance Company, on Tuesday, April 11 at 8 p.m. in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center. Admission is $15 for adults, $7 for children under 18 and non-Coker students, and free with Coker College ID. Led by artistic director Karola Lüttringhaus, Alban Elved is a contemporary dance company that uses live music, visual art, film or video, aerial work and theater to expand the boundaries of dance performance. Originally from Berlin, Germany, the company has been based in Winston-Salem, N.C, since 1999 and tours nationally and internationally. Performed in the style of magical realism by three dancers, Rooms dramatizes the mystery of human experience and the need to rediscover forgotten memories. The choreography is structured around the story of three sisters: Marta, the narrator, who struggles with memory loss; the light and airy Friedolina; and the no-nonsense Annabella. Rooms premiered at the 2005 Piccolo Spoleto festival in Charleston, S.C. Critics hailed it as thought provoking, challenging, fun and deep. Following their Coker College performance Alban Elved is taking Rooms to Wake Forest University. This year, the company has also given performances in New York, Washington, DC, and Stuttgart, Germany. According to Lüttringhaus, “alban elved” is the Celtic name for the fall equinox and literally translates to “the light of the water.” The company’s web site is www.albanelved.com. While at Coker, Alban Elved will also conduct a master class for dance students.
