HARTSVILLE, SC - Coker College recognized the academic achievements of its student athletes at the school’s fourth annual Academic Honors Banquet held at Prestwood Country Club Thursday night. Seniors Sara Lauzze and Frederica McClary took home the night’s biggest honor, as the co-winners of the Academic Athlete of the Year award.

Lauzze, a member of the women’s soccer team, is a Physical Education major with a concentration in Exercise Science. She owns a 3.76 GPA and is a perennial member of the Dean’s List and also the National Dean’s List. She has been a freshman mentor, is currently the President of the Ambassadors, serves as an RA, works with Special Olympics, and serves in a large capacity with the American Cancer Society.

The Bath, NY native defines the phrase “student-athlete”, participating in three sports during her time at Coker. Lauzze played three years of basketball, two years of soccer, and ran for two seasons with the cross country team. She has been recognized on the CVAC All-Academic team twice for basketball, once for soccer, and once for cross country. She made the CVAC Presidential Honor Roll three times, and won the Coaches Award for women’s basketball as a freshman and sophomore.

McClary is also a multiple-sport athlete, excelling in volleyball and basketball. As a sophomore she was named Best Offensive Player in volleyball and last year she earned two honors, named the team MVP for volleyball and Most Improved Player in women’s basketball.

She is a four-time member of the CVAC All Academic Team and owns a 3.73 GPA as a Psychology and Sociology double-major. McClary, from Manning, SC, has been a member of the Dean’s List at Coker every semester she has attended, and has been in the top-10 of her class in each of her four years. This year McClary was honored as Coker’s Finalist for the Murphey Osborne Award, the highest academic honor awarded by the CVAC.

Cross Country head coach Ley Fletcher recognized senior Christina Grivetti of his women’s team for her selection to the NCAA II Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Grivetti is Coker’s eighth Academic All-American in any sport and was honored for her remarkable achievement. She is a three-time All-CVAC selection and is the co-owner of the fastest 5K time in program history.

Junior Terie Watkins got a surprise when she received the J. Lacy McLean Award from Dr. Steve Terry. The award is presented at each private college in South Carolina to a rising senior, South Carolina resident, who has performed well academically, demonstrated commitment to public affairs, community service, and leadership. Terie is a three-year member of the women’s soccer team, the CVAC All-Academic Team, and is a three-year Dean’s List student.

Seventy Cobra student athletes achieved a 3.25 or better semester grade point average in Spring or Fall of 2003 and 11 of that group made a 4.0 for the semester. The Athletic Team GPA Award went to the women’s cross country team for the Spring of 2003 semester and to the women’s tennis team for the Fall of 2003.

The College also recognized 11 student-athletes who were honored as CVAC Academic All-Conference. The award is presented annually to junior and senior student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.

This was the fourth year that Coker has honored the academic achievements of its student athletes. The Banquet is held in conjunction with the National Student-Athlete Day, which was designed to honor student-athletes of all ages who achieved excellence in academics and athletics.
