Coker College offers a major in English with a concentration in Professional Writing and Education. The student majoring in English at Coker College is prepared for a wide range of professional or graduate studies. English can be the foundation for careers in fields such as advertising, public relations, technical writing, publishing, journalism, government, or social services. It is also a solid basis for the graduate studies in fields as varied as medicine, education, library science, journalism, creative writing, business and law. English majors practice critical reading skills and develop their ability to synthesize information and ideas easily and to express themselves effectively. major in english

Coursework: Classes such as Literary Criticism, British Literature I/II, American Literature I/II, Medieval Studies, Shakespeare, The Romantic Movement, Faulkner and His Contemporaries, Women in Literature, and Creative Writing.

concentration in education

Students seeking secondary teaching certification in conjunction with the English major must meet requirements for teacher certification described in The Coker College Teacher Education Bulletin.

concentration in professional writing

Coursework: Must meet major requirements plus classes such as those listed above and upper level courses such as Playwriting I, Film Criticism, Seminar in Tutoring Writing, Writing for the Media, and Student Publications.

minor in english

Coursework: Classes such as those listed above and upper level courses such as The Victorian Age, African American Literature, Modern Poetry, and Postcolonial Literature.

Students have the options of completing additional majors, minors, or specializations. Students can apply for an Honors Project in their major.

scholarship information

Every student who applies to Coker is eligible for scholarships and grants. All students who are accepted to Coker College are automatically considered for academic scholarships. Coker awards approximately $5.1 million in scholarships annually. After receiving their student’s financial aid award, many families find that it costs the same, or less, to attend Coker as it would to attend a state university.

We offer tours at 10 am and 2 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at 11 am and 2 pm on Tuesday and Thursday. Visits can also be made by special arrangement on the weekends.
