general overview

Coker College offers a major in chemistry that can open up a wide range of career fields including laboratory science, industrial management, government and teaching. Many interdisciplinary careers are also open to chemistry graduates. Housed in the William Chambers Coker Science Building, the chemistry program gives students access to fully equipped labs and research-quality instruments that include: a 300 MHz multinuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer; mass, infrared, and ultraviolet/visible spectrometers; and gas, liquid and ion chromatographs. You will also have 24-hour access to a computer lab with 24 PCs and wireless internet access.

major in chemistry

Coursework: Classes and labs such as General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Introduction to Biochemistry. Majors must also participate in an approved internship and present a public seminar on their research.

minor in chemistry

Coursework: Classes and labs such as those listed above and upper level courses such as Analytical Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry Techniques.

Students have the options of completing additional majors, minors, or specializations. Students can apply for an Honors Project in their major.

scholarship information

Every student who applies to Coker is eligible for scholarships and grants. All students who are accepted to Coker College are automatically considered for academic scholarships. Coker awards approximately $5.1 million in scholarships annually. After receiving their student’s financial aid award, many families find that it costs the same, or less, to attend Coker as it would to attend a state university.

There’s nothing like experiencing Coker for yourself, and we invite you to visit our campus. To schedule a tour, contact Coker Admissions and we will customize your visit to suit your interests. Please contact us at least one week before you’d like to visit. We can reserve some time just for you. We offer tours at 10 am and 2 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and  at 11 am and 2 pm on Tuesday and Thursday. Visits can also be made by special arrangement on the weekends.
