general overview

Coker College offers a major in biology with concentrations in ecology, molecular biology, and pre-medical. A major in biology is a stepping stone to many careers including medical doctor, pharmacist, medical technologist, animal researcher, veterinarian, pharmaceutical salesperson, physical therapy or environmental specialist. Housed in the William Chambers Coker Science Building, the biology program gives students access to fully equipped labs and research-quality instruments that include: a 300 MHz multinuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer; mass, infrared, and ultraviolet/visible spectrometers; and gas, liquid and ion chromatographs. As a biology major you will have 24-hour access to a computer lab with 24 PCs and wireless internet access.

graduation requirements

Students majoring in biology choose one of three concentrations: ecology, molecular biology, or pre-medical. Consult the academic catalog for specific graduation requirements.

major in biology

Coursework: Classes such as Core Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology, Core Principles of Ecology and Evolution, Core Principles of Genetics, and Microbiology.

concentration in ecology

Coursework: Classes such as Invertebrate Zoology, Applied Ecology: The Human Predicament, and Special Topics.

concentration in molecular biology

Coursework: Classes such as Advanced Cellular and Molecular Biology, Advanced Molecular Genetics, and Introduction to Biochemistry.

concentration in pre-medical

Coursework: Classes such as Human Anatomy and Physiology II, Microbiology, Principles of Economics, and Calculus Physics II.

minor in biology

Coursework: Classes such as those listed above and upper level courses such as Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Comparative Vertebrate Physiology, and Plant Science.

Students have the options of completing additional majors, minors, or specializations. Students can apply for an Honors Project in their major.

scholarship information

Every student who applies to Coker is eligible for scholarships and grants. All students who are accepted to Coker College are automatically considered for academic scholarships. Coker awards approximately $5.1 million in scholarships annually. After receiving their student’s financial aid award, many families find that it costs the same, or less, to attend Coker as it would to attend a state university.

Please contact us at least one week before you’d like to visit. We can reserve some time just for you. We offer tours at 10 am and 2 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at 11 am and 2 pm on Tuesday and Thursday. Visits can also be made by special arrangement on the weekends.
