HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Oct. 20, 2011 – Pause for Paws, a new student organization at Coker College, will collect supplies and monetary donations to benefit the Darlington County Humane Society on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Cobras’ home soccer game against St. Andrews.

One of more than 30 recognized student organizations on campus, Pause for Paws encourages Coker students, faculty and staff to become active supporters of the Darlington County Humane Society.

“Besides conducting service and fundraising projects for our local shelter, Pause for Paws creates opportunities for students to interact directly with shelter animals, which provides the added benefit of supporting the mental well-being of our students, ” said Assistant Professor of Biology Jennifer Borgo, who advises the organization.

Supplies on the shelter’s wish list include puppy and kitten chow, dog biscuits and chews, treats for dogs and cats, pet toys, collars and leashes, retractable leashes, pet shampoo, towels, blankets, laundry detergent, hand soap and bleach.

In addition to planning fundraising projects and activities to increase public awareness for the shelter, Coker’s Pause for Paws hosts pre-adoption “Bath Brigades,” organizes “Wiley Walkers” to give adult dogs much needed socialization and exercise and holds pet service days to encourage groups of students go out to work at the shelter.
