In “Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul” author and physician Dr. Stuart Brown argues that play is no less important than oxygen and that it's a powerful force in nature that helps determine the likelihood of the very survival of the human race. Having studied thousands of people's play histories, from murderers to Nobel Prize winners, Brown reveals that play is an essential way humans learn to socialize. Coker College is also a major advocate for play. Each year the Coker Education Department hosts “Play Day” for hundreds of local children to promote the importance of play and to honor young children and those who nurture them. This book discussion is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information on public programs and activities at the library, call 383-8125 or visit www.cokerlibrary.blogspot.com.
