HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sept. 16, 2011 – The Coker College social work department will host Coker’s 12th annual social work conference on Friday, Sept. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Meharry Medical College Associate Professor Carolyn Szetela will present the conference keynote, which is titled Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Coming Out of Hiding.

Szetela's major areas of interest include behavioral and social medicine, children in medical research, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and the prevention of harms due to alcohol and drug misuse. She is also a Co-Investigator with the FASD Southeast Regional Training Center and serves on Meharry's Institutional Review Board.

As an ethics teacher for medical students and trainees, Szetela encourages role play and reflection upon attitudes to help build students’ and trainees’ confidence in knowing and honoring ethical practices.

Other presentations at this year’s conference include A Year in Russia by Fulbright scholar Paul K. Dezendorff; The Role of Social Workers in Disasters by Robert Carlton; and Best Practices in Geriatric Illnesses by Coker College adjunct faculty Eva Letke and Kethryn Henderson.
