For more information, contact Barb Steadman - 843.857.4199 HARTSVILLE, S.C. – June 20, 2011 – Arguably, one the most dynamic programs at Coker College last year was the one that encouraged the most people to do the most moving, and, this week, the College announced two changes that promise to step up the pace even more. Brandon Fain has been promoted to Director of Intramurals and Wellness, a program within the Office of Campus Life that is combating unhealthy trends, especially prevalent in the South, to create a college experience that helps students become healthy, satisfied and engaged—individuals who are truly ready for life beyond college. Drawing fresh attention to the role of competitive programs within comprehensive wellness programs, Brandi Kelly-Ross will join the department as Coker’s dance team coach, beginning in August.
“As a part-time employee last year, Fain transformed the intramurals program into a comprehensive fitness and wellness department,” said Coker College Dean of Students Jason Umfress. “In fact, under Fain’s leadership as the program’s coordinator, the number of programmed activities increased by 167 percent and student participation in those activities increased by 128 percent over the previous year,” he added. In his expanded role, Fain will administer the physical fitness requirements that are incorporated into the first-year student experience and work collaboratively with Food Services, Student Health and Counseling Services to provide a holistic approach to supporting the health and wellbeing of the entire campus population. Kelly-Ross is former Coker dance student and owner of Kelly’s School of Performing Arts in Hartsville. She has more than 30 years of experience in dance, 14 of which involved choreography for competitive dance teams. She will be instrumental in changing the team’s focus to a more competitive squad. “Brandi is just the person to lead the program in this new direction. Our goal is that within five years Coker will not only be a major player in competitive dance, but a national champion.” For more information about Campus Life programs at Coker College, visit http://www.coker.edu/student-activities.
