Senior Social Work student Eva Cook, Camden, S.C., completed 291 service hours in 2010 and earned the Patient and Family Care Volunteer Award. In addition, Cook earned the gold level of The President’s Volunteer Service Award. At Coker, Cook also serves as the vice president of the Social Work Student Organization. Senior Social Work student Kimberly Stanfield, Bennettsville, S.C., earned the bronze level of The President’s Volunteer Service Award, for volunteer service between 100 and 174 hours. Stanfield is secretary of the Social Work Student Association and was inducted into the Rho Theta Chapter of the national social work honor society Phi Alpha earlier this semester. “I am pleased that two of our majors have been honored for their outstanding service during the completion of their social work internship placements,” said Professor of Social Work Jeanne Cook. “The requirement that social work majors gain professional experience as part of their academic preparation is a key advantage of this major. Eva and Kim exemplify well the values, knowledge and skills we seek to instill in our students.” National Volunteer Week began as a way to honor those who give of their time to help others. It has grown over the years, and now it is used not only to recognize volunteers but also to encourage others to partake in acts of service. The President’s Volunteer Service Award was created to recognize volunteers who reached a high standard of service in a 12-month period. LifeCare Hospice is proud to be a certifying organization with The President’s Volunteer Service Award, which is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service. Coker’s social work program is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education’s Commission on Accreditation and its graduates are eligible to apply for advanced standing in graduate social work programs.
