“We hope that members of the community will participate in this important screening, especially if they have recently been less optimistic or hopeful than they have in the past,” said Dr. Katherine Kelly, director of Coker College’s Counseling Services. According to Kelly, having a negative attitude can be a sign of depression or can increase the chances of becoming depressed. “If your mood or outlook on life interferes with everyday activities and interpersonal relationships, it may mean more than just a temperamental trait,” she said. Other symptoms of depression include: persistent sad, anxious or empty mood; feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness; loss of interest or pleasure in ordinary activities; difficulty concentrating or making decisions; restlessness or irritability; inability to sleep or oversleeping; changes in appetite or weight; and unexplained aches and pains. The depression screening at Coker College involves completing a brief, written questionnaire, learning about the symptoms of depression, and how to help a friend or family member who may be at risk. Health care professionals will also be available for consultation. Coker College’s Depression Screening Day is sponsored by the college’s Counseling Center, Psi Chi Honor Society, and Mental Health America of Darlington County.
