At least 175 students will collectively volunteer at various sites in Darlington County, including the Darlington County Community Action Agency’s new location, the Old Thornwell School, where they will clean classrooms, grounds and administrative offices. Other efforts include Kalmia Gardens, where volunteers will plant flowers, create hypertufa containers, distribute pine straw, weed, pick up trash and spread sand for the human sundial project; the Hartsville Boys and Girls club, where volunteers will paint and clean; and Habitat for Humanity, which involves an interior painting project. The Hartsville YMCA, Coker’s community partner for this event, will offer childcare services for ALPHA students, faculty and staff during the volunteer efforts. Children aged nine and over can volunteer with their parents. Anyone interested in childcare should contact Sheila Easterly at 843-857-4196 for more information. Also in honor of the National Day of Service and Remembrance, a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 9 at Coffee at the Courtyard. An Army veteran and current student will ring the bell during a Moment of Silence. Students will have the opportunity to sign a banner commemorating loved ones lost on September 11, 2001, or to write about their own memories of the day. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Coker College readies undergraduates for personal and professional success through a distinctive four-year program that emphasizes a practical application of the liberal arts as well as hands-on and discussion-based learning within and beyond the classroom.
