Cobras Head To CVAC Semifinals With Upset Win

BANNER ELK, NC – Coker College booked a spot in the CVAC Tournament Semifinals with a 1-0 upset victory at Lees-McRae Tuesday night in women’s collegiate soccer.  The Cobras went to Banner Elk as the seventh seed in the tournament and shocked the second seeded Bobcats.

The Cobras were awarded a free kick midway into the contest courtesy of a Lees-McRae foul.  Senior Jodi Rummel took advantage of the scoring opportunity, sending a pass towards the front of the net that was picked up and directed home by freshmen Cara Durrance.  The goal, scored in the 22nd minute of the first half, was Durrance’s second tally of the season.  This was the only scoring the Cobras would need as their defense held firm, resisting every Bobcat scoring opportunity.

Sophomore Jacque Stewart was the story in goal, recording six saves for her second consecutive shutout.  Anita Heckman of Lees-McRae recorded one save for the Bobcats.  Lees-McRae held a 10-3 advantage over the Cobras in shots.

Coker travels to Belmont-Abbey for a Saturday, November 8th match against 6th seeded Erskine College.
