Cobras Fade In 3-1 Defeat
HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker came out inspired in its match against St. Andrews Presbyterian College Wednesday night, but after a first set win the Cobras dropped the next three in women’s collegiate volleyball. CC’s five match winning streak was snapped in the loss and the Cobras drop to 7-4 overall and 1-4 in the CVAC. St. Andrews improves to 7-7 on the season and 4-1 in conference.
Coker responded well to a vocal crowd in the first set and rode the momentum to a 30-23 win. Senior Selena Davis was especially effective, crushing nine first set kills with only one error.
The two games that followed were less enticing, as the Cobras committed too many unforced errors and looked a little more sluggish. With defeat at hand, Coker showed more life in the fourth set and appeared to be on their way to forcing a fifth set. However, the team couldn’t hold onto a late lead and were helpless as the Knights tied the game at 27-27 and ran off the final three kills to win the set 30-27.
Davis finished with 16 kills and 16 digs, and freshman Amanda Reinert tallied nine kills without any hitting errors. Sophomore Andrea Manuel totaled 15 kills and 21 digs and freshman Tara Nelson contributed 39 assists, 16 digs and three blocks solo.
Coker will try to regroup tomorrow night with another CVAC match against Queens University of Charlotte. The home contest is scheduled for a 6:30 PM start.
