Cobras Dig Deep For Five Set Win

HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker had to dig deep Saturday afternoon but eventually pulled out a 3-2 victory over Limestone College in collegiate volleyball. CC improves to 2-2 on the year and 1-2 in the CVAC, while the Saints drop to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Cobras cruised in the first set to a 30-18 win and led 26-24 in the second before Limestone closed the game out with a 6-2 run to win 30-28. Coker led late in the third set 25-22 but faltered again to lose by a 30-28 margin.

In the crucial fourth set the two teams battled back and forth, with the Saints making another late run to grab 29-28 and 30-29 leads.  The Cobras didn’t fold this time, however, and after a 31-31 tie, closed out the game 33-31.

With the momentum back on their side, CC ran out to an 8-2 lead in the final set.  Limestone pulled back to trail 11-8, but Coker bared down and won the game and the match 15-10 on a booming kill by sophomore Andrea Manuel

Manuel finished with 24 kills, including three in the decisive fifth game, 15 digs, and three aces.  Senior Frederica McClary totaled 21 kills and two block solos, and freshman Tara Nelson finished with a career high 52 assists and 19 digs.  Senior Jessica McKee battled through an elbow injury to rack up 21 digs and two blocks.

The Cobras will next travel to St. Andrews on Tuesday, September 9, for a 6:30 conference match against the Knights.
