Cobras Earn Dramatic Win Over Francis Marion
HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker came out on top of a hotly contested match-up with Francis Marion Wednesday night 3-2 in collegiate volleyball. The match went back and forth all night long before the Cobras pulled ahead in the decisive fifth set to win the intense affair. CC improves to 3-3 on the year, while the Patriots drop to 4-5.
Coker came out inspired in the first set before a vocal home crowd to win 30-22. Senior Frederica McClary pounded out six of her 15 kills in the first set to push the Cobras to victory.
FMU bounced back in the second and established the up-and-down tempo of the match by taking the set 30-15. Coker didn’t let the setback discourage them, however, and cruised to a 30-16 win in game three. The Cobras couldn’t continue their momentum into the fourth game, as the Patriots stormed back to a 30-20 win.
All the passion of the first four sets boiled over into the fifth frame, as nearly every point turned into a long rally in the shortened game. The Cobras big hitters came through when it counted and CC wrapped up the victory with a 15-13 game five win.
McClary led the way with 15 kills and only three errors in the attack. Sophomore Andrea Manuel totaled 13 kills, 19 digs and three service aces, and senior Selena Davis finished with 14 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Tara Nelson was the steadying force for CC with 42 assists and a team-high 20 digs and senior Jessica McKee was outstanding defensively with 17 digs.
The Cobras travel to North Carolina this weekend to face Peace College and Meredith College this Saturday, September 13 at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
