Cobras Fall To Barton 3-1

WILSON, NC – The Barton College volleyball team rose to 3-0 both overall and in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference with 3-1 win over visiting Coker on Monday evening in Wilson Gym. 

The Lady Bulldogs prevailed 30-23, 26-30, 30-27, 30-21 in a hard-fought battle. Coker fell to 0-1 overall and in the league in front of 155 fans.

The serving of 6-foot freshman Keanu Vinson helped Barton break from 10-10 deadlock in the first game. Junior outside hitter Kelly Lamotta finished off the game with a kill off a set from senior Jamie McFadden.

Diving digs from freshman Tara Nelson, along with the front-line blocking of Nelson, Courtney Barton and Selena Davis helped the Cobras win game two.

Barton fell behind early in the third game, but battled even at 11-11, then pulled away late. The hitting of junior Tawnya Harper and the defense of Laurie Alpert were key in the Lady Bulldogs’ rally.

Freshman Stephanie Munoz delivered a number of big serves in game four to get Barton off to a 17-7 lead. Harper finished off the match with a kill.

“It was a good win,” Barton head coach Wendee Saintsing said. “They are probably one of the best blocking teams we will play all year, and they get up a lot of balls that other teams won’t. I think we beat a good team tonight.”

Alpert finished the match with 18 digs from the libero position. McFadden logged 50 assists, 11 digs, two kills and one ace. Munoz recorded 16 digs, two aces and seven kills. Up front, Harper and Vinson pounded 18 kills apiece. Vinson had five blocks and Harper three.

Nelson had 36 assists, 12 digs and three kills for Coker. Andrea Manuel soared for 23 kills, making only five errors on 45 attempts, and added four aces off jump serves and 11 digs. Davis notched 14 kills and four blocks.

Coker will try to rebound at Converse College Tuesday night at 7:00 PM.
