Cobras Claim First Round Victory
BANNER ELK, NC – Coker won its first game at the CVAC Tournament 3-2 over Belmont Abbey College Friday afternoon in collegiate volleyball. The eighth-seeded Cobras defeated the ninth-seeded Crusaders in the first round of the tournament and advance to face top-ranked Lees-McRae, Saturday at 11:30 AM.
Coker won the first set 30-17 but dropped the next two 30-27 and 30-28. Trailing two games to one, the Cobras seized momentum back and took the fourth set 30-20. Having regained control and knotting the match at two games apiece, the Cobras tore through the fifth set to a decisive 15-6 win.
Sophomore Andrea Manuel shook off the effects of a two-week break between matches to rack up 20 kills, 18 digs, three aces and only three hitting errors. Senior Frederica McClary also turned in an efficient hitting effort with 16 kills and only one error.
Freshman Tara Nelson contributed four kills, 51 assists, 21 digs and five block assists, and senior Selena Davis tallied eight kills, 14 digs and seven block assists. Senior Lindsey Bocskay recorded 11 kills and freshman Nicole Schaum added 16 digs.
