HARTSVILLE, SC - Coker defeated visiting Wheeling Jesuit University 3-1 and 4-1 Thursday afternoon in collegiate softball.  CC improves to 14-0 on the year while the Cardinals drop to 3-7.

The Cobras received a bit of a scare in game one when WJU scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.  Coker responded in the bottom of the inning, however, with a run of its own to knot things up at 1-1.  CC plated two more runs in the fifth held on for the win.

Freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC pitched a complete game four-hitter, allowing one unearned run and zero walks while striking out 11.  The performance is Bigham’s second double-digit strikeout tally this season.

Leading the charge offensively were seniors Summer Joyner/Andrews, SC, Sheritha McKenzie/Lake City, SC, and Amy Shelley/Marion, SC, who picked up two hits apiece.  Joyner had a triple, drew a walk, drove in a run and scored once.  McKenzie hit a double and scored a run, and Shelley had a double and a RBI.

The Cobras rapped 10 hits in game two but were only able to push across four runs.  Coker did all of their damage in the second, third, and fourth innings, starting with a two run double by sophomore Amanda Shelton/Huntington Beach, CA in the bottom of the second.  McKenzie scored in the third on a RBI single from Shelley and senior Jamie Clingan/Glen Burnie, MD walked home when Joyner earned a base-on-balls in the fourth.

Shelton pitched her second game in two days, going seven innings with two hits and one walk and one unearned run allowed while striking out seven.  Joyner was a perfect 3-3 with a walk and Shelley went 2-4 with one RBI.

The Cobras play Friday and Saturday, March 5-6, at the Catawba College Tournament in Salisbury, NC.  CC will face Wheeling Jesuit and Georgia College and State University on Friday, followed by Catawba and West Liberty State University on Saturday.
