McKenzie's 6th Inning Heroics Key In Win

HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker earned a sweep of Slippery Rock University with 10-0 and 4-3 wins in collegiate softball.  Senior Sheritha McKenzie/Lake City, SC bopped her first homerun of the season in the sixth inning of the second game to give CC the 4-3 win.  The Cobras improve to 23-1 on the year and the Rock drops to 4-6.

Coker hit the ball as well as it has all season in the first game, scoring two in the first, six in the second, and two in the third.  Freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC did the rest, pitching a complete-game two hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Sophomore Amy Shelly/Marion, SC went 3-4 with three runs scored and one RBI, and classmate Jacque Stewart went 2-3 with a homer, three RBI, and two runs scored.  McKenzie was a perfect 3-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored and sophomore Christan Morabito/Charlotte, NC had two hits, one RBI and a run scored.

The Cobras had a bit more trouble the second time around and needed McKenzie’s late inning heroics to get the win.  Coker went on top with one run in the second and two in the third, but the Rock battled back with a three run fourth inning.  An error to start the fourth opened the door and SRU followed up with a single and a double to get on the board.

Senior Kaylene Fountain/Spokane, WA pitched well excluding the fourth inning mishap, scattering five hits, allowing only one earned run, and striking out eight.  She also led the team with two hits, including a home run, drove in two RBI and scored a run.  Sophomore Brandi Holder/Durham, NC had a double and scored and Stewart drove in a run.

Coker will face a stiff challenge this weekend at the Francis Marion Tournament at Freedom Florence.  The Cobras will play five games against high-quality opponents, including sixth-ranked North Florida and number one Kennesaw State.
