Coker Sweeps Pfeiffer In Season Opener
HARTSVILLE, SC - Coker swept Pfeiffer University 3-2 and 10-3 Friday afternoon in collegiate softball. The Cobras struggled to produce runs in the first game but pounded the Falcons in game two with two big innings. Coker improves to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference, while Pfeiffer drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the CVAC.
Senior Jamie Clingan put CC on the board in the first inning of game one after a leadoff walk. Clingan stole second during the next at bat and came around to score on throwing errors by the catcher and second baseman. The Falcons evened the game in the fourth inning and then went ahead 2-1 in the sixth with three straight singles and a ground out.
Coker responded in the bottom of the sixth, getting the first two batters on. Senior Sheritha McKenzie scored on an RBI ground out, and sophomore Ashley Altman put CC ahead on a passed ball. Freshman Somer Bigham came in to pitch the seventh and accomplished the unusual feat of striking out four batters in one inning.
Senior Kaylene Fountain started the game for Coker and went six innings with two earned runs allowed and three strikeouts to earn the win. McKenzie went 2-3 with a run scored and freshman Jacque Stewart picked up CC’s only RBI of the game.
In game two Pfeiffer scored first in the third inning on a RBI single by Katie Shay. Coker finally got its bats going in the bottom half of the inning and scored four in the third, five in the fourth, and one in the fifth. The Falcons posted two more runs in the fifth to complete the scoring.
Bigham started game two and went five innings with three earned runs allowed and five K’s. Sophomore Marie Mascio went 2-3 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored to lead the Cobras. Fountain went 2-3 with one RBI and three runs scored, and McKenzie also went 2-3 with a RBI and two runs scored. Altman hit a double and drove in a run, and sophomore Amy Shelly picked up a hit and a RBI.
Coker is scheduled to host Mt. Olive now on Saturday, February 21, at 2:00 PM.
