HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker took a pair of games from visiting Fairmont State 7-5 and 8-0 Wednesday afternoon in collegiate softball. The Cobras surpass the 20-win mark at 21-1 on the year, while the Fighting Falcons drop to 0-2.
The first game went back and forth, with the Falcons taking a 1-0 lead in the first and a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Coker answered with three runs in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to regain a 7-2 lead. Fairmont rallied with three runs in the sixth and had the bases loaded in the seventh before striking out to end the game.
Freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC picked up the win in game one, pitching seven innings with two runs allowed and seven strikeouts. Sophomore Amanda Shelton/Huntington Beach, CA had an unsuccessful outing in the sixth, giving up three runs without recording an out.
Sophomore Christan Morabito/Charlotte, NC went 2-4 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored and classmate Jacque Stewart/Cumming, GA went 2-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Senior Sheritha McKenzie/Lake City, SC went 2-4 with one RBI and a run scored.
Senior Kaylene Fountain/Spokane, WA went the distance in game two to earn the victory, allowing only three hits, one walk and striking out nine.
The Cobras ended the game early with two big innings. CC plated five runs in the third and three in the sixth to get the shutout victory. Sophomore Amy Shelley/Marion, SC had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored and McKenzie went 3-3 with one RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Brandi Holder/Durham, NC drove in two on two hits, and Fountain scored twice and got two singles.
Coker returns to the diamond on Thursday, March 11, for a double-header against Slippery Rock University. The first game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
