FLORENCE, SC – The Coker softball team swept Francis Marion for the first time in three years Tuesday afternoon, winning 3-2 in game one and 5-2 in game two. The Cobras remain perfect at 10-0 on the year, while FMU drops to 8-4.
Coker trailed 2-0 in the first game but battled back with three runs in the fifth inning to take control. Senior Kaylene Fountain/Spokane, WA earned the win for CC, going four innings with two runs allowed, before handing the ball to freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC. Bigham earned her second save of the year with three strike outs and no walks allowed. Freshman Sam Goff took the loss for FMU, going seven innings with four strikeouts.
Sophomore Amy Shelly/Marion, SC went 1-2 with a RBI and a run scored to lead Coker and classmate Brandi Holder/Durham, NC also went 1-2 with a run scored.
Coker trailed 2-1 in the sixth inning of game two but came back again with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to close the door on FMU. Sophomore Marie Mascio/Pelion, SC brought the Cobras back with a two-run shot in the sixth.
Mascio clubbed a double in addition to the homer, drove in two runs, and scored twice in the contest. Senior Summer Joyner/Andrews, SC went 2-4 with a RBI and a run scored, and Bigham also rapped two hits, drove in a run and scored.
Bigham started the second game and went the distance with four strikeouts and six walks allowed. Jessica Johnson also pitched a complete game for Francis Marion, striking out seven and allowing only one walk.
The Cobras host Limestone College at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 3 and the Patriots will face Goldey-Beacon College on March 5, at 2:00 PM.
