FLORENCE, SC – If Coker is to win the CVAC Softball Tournament it will have to do it the hard way after a disappointing 2-0 loss to second-seeded Belmont Abbey Saturday night at Freedom Florence Softball Complex. The Cobras won their first game of the day 3-1 over St. Andrews before falling in the nightcap.
The Crusaders went on top 2-0 in the second inning and pitcher Keri Blackwelder held off Coker for the win. CC put runners on second and third in the third and fourth innings but couldn’t push any runs across in both instances. The Cobras left eight on base in the game and had no extra base hits.
Freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC pitched the complete game for Coker, allowing eight hits, two runs and striking out four. Sophomore Amy Shelley/Marion, SC had two hits for the Cobras and five of her teammates garnered one hit apiece.
Cameron Green’s double in the second plated the winning run for the Crusaders and she also scored a run.
The Cobras will try to regroup for a consolation bracket game at 1:30 PM on Sunday against the winner of the first game of the day, between St. Andrews and Limestone College.
