Coker Drops A Pair To Columbus State

HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker took a disappointing pair of losses to Columbus State Wednesday afternoon in collegiate softball.  CC fell 4-2 in game one and 4-3 in the second contest.  The Cobras fall to 28-9 on the year and while CSU improves to 20-8.

Victory slipped away from Coker in game one when the Cougars came back in the seventh for the win.  CSU went on top 1-0 in the first but the Cobras answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.  CC wasted an opportunity to take the lead in the inning with runners on second and third with none out.

The contest remained knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when senior Jamie Clingan/Glen Burnie, MD knocked a single between first and second base to score the go-ahead run.  In the top of the seventh senior Kaylene Fountain/Spokane, WA recorded two outs with runners on first and second but left the game still feeling the effects of a previous errant throw which hit her in the back of the head.

Freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC entered and promptly went up 0-2 on Robin Williams  After two balls and a pair of foul balls Williams got the pitch she’d been waiting for and cracked it down the leftfield line for a three-run homer.  In the bottom of the seventh the Cobras flied out to the Columbus State center fielder for all three outs.

Coker couldn’t close out game two either, losing a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning.  With two outs and runners on second and third Bigham fielded a bunt and threw it too high for first baseman Jacque Stewart/Cumming, GA to catch.  Both runners scored and the Cougars led 4-3.  The Cobras managed only one more hit the rest of the way and were unable to come back.

Sophomore Christan Morabito/Charlotte, NC went 3-6 on the day with two runs scored and classmate Brandi Holder/Durham, NC went 3-6 with one RBI and a run scored.  Fountain took the loss in game two after allowing three runs (two earned) and Bigham lost game two, going seven innings with five hits and four runs allowed (three earned), while striking out eight.

The Cobras travel to St. Andrews tomorrow, March 25, for a make-up game against the Knights at 2:00 PM.
