Bigham Pitches Perfect Game, Coker Wins Two
SALISBURY, NC – Coker bounced back from its first loss of the season with a pair of victories at the Catawba College Tournament. The Cobras defeated West Liberty State 1-0 in eight innings and knocked off host Catawba 3-0 in their second game. CC improves to 17-1 on the year and returns home for a double header against Edinboro on Sunday, March 7, at 2:00 PM.
In game two, Coker didn’t need much offense as freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC pitched a perfect game with 10 strikeouts. With the freshman cruising in the circle, the Cobras received enough offense from seniors Summer Joyner/Andrews, SC and Sheritha McKenzie/Lake City, SC to get the win. Joyner went 2-3 with a run scored and a walk, and McKenzie went 2-4 with one RBI.
Game one was a test for the CC, as West Liberty State pushed them to extra innings. Sophomore Amanda Shelton/Huntington Beach, CA put together her fourth consecutive solid outing this week and combined with Bigham to hold WLSU scoreless until the Coker bats finally came around.
Shelton pitched six innings and allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out four. Bigham came in to pitch the seventh and eighth innings, allowing no hits and striking out one. Sophomore Christan Morabito/Charlotte, NC had Coker’s only hit of the game, a double, and stole a base. Joyner reached twice on a pair of walks and stole three bases.
