Cobras Earn Hard Fought Sweep On Senior Day

HARTSVILLE, SC – The Coker softball team did just enough to sweep Augusta State University on Senior Day, taking game one 2-1 in nine innings and 4-2 in game two.  Coker improves to 33-12 while the Jaguars fall to 12-32.

The Cobras went on top in the bottom of the second 1-0 when freshman Nicole Crider/Florence, SC walked with the bases loaded.  CC wasted an opportunity for a big inning however, getting no more with the bases loaded and no outs.

Both teams left plenty of runners on base and it came back to haunt Coker in the sixth inning.  Augusta State senior Kristi Davis hit a solo shot to tie the game at 1-1, where it stayed through seven innings.

In the top of the eighth ASU had a chance to go ahead but Crider caught a fly ball and gunned the runner out at home for the third out.  Coker sent the Jags down 1-2-3 in the ninth and quickly ended the game.  Sophomore Ashley Altman/Lake City, SC went to third on a ground out and scored the game winner on a throwing error by the ASU first baseman.

Crider finished 1-3 with an RBI and sophomores Brandi Holder/Durham, NC and Altman scored a run each.  Sophomore Amy Shelley/Marion, SC, senior Sheritha McKenzie/Lake City, SC, and sophomore Jacque Stewart/Cumming, GA all had two hits apiece.  Freshman Somer Bigham/Florence, SC earned her 14th win of the season with nine innings of work, scattering six hits with six strikeouts and one run allowed.

Senior Kaylene Fountain/Spokane, WA came back from injury to start game two but had a difficult first inning.  Davis did the damage again for the Jaguars with a two RBI single that put CC in a 2-0 hole.

Coker answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Shelley scored on a double from McKenzie.  Fountain found her groove in the second and shut ASU out the rest of the way.

The Cobras tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth when Fountain drew a walk with the bases loaded.  Coker then took the lead for good in the sixth on a RBI single by sophomore Christan Morabito/Charlotte, NC.  The final run came on a single by McKenzie which scored Altman from second.

Morabito went 3-4 with a run scored and one RBI and McKenzie went 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.  Shelley had two more hits and a run scored and Crider went 1-3 with a run scored.  Fountain improved to 14-2 on the season with six hits allowed over seven innings, two earned runs allowed and six strikeouts.

Coker completes the regular season with a double-header at Queens University of Charlotte on Thursday, April 8, at 2:00 PM.
