Dave Schmotzer has served as the head coach of the Coker College baseball
team since 1993 when he revitalized the program after it lay dormant for nearly
two decades. In the past eight seasons, Schmotzer has compiled 285 wins against
only 142 losses, including seven seasons with 30+ wins.
Schmotzer led the Cobras to the NAIA World Series in 1994, earning NAIA
Mideast Region Coach of the Year honors. Under Schmotzer, the Cobras have
captured numerous conference titles, two conference tournament titles, and have
finished as tournament runner-up in the past two seasons.
Before coming to Coker, Schmotzer was the Athletic Director and Head Baseball
Coach at Union College in Barbourville, KY. In his final of three seasons at
Union, Schmotzer led the Bulldogs to 41 wins, a school record that still stands.
Schmotzer began his coaching career at Trinity High School in Cleveland, Ohio
where he led the team to an overall record of 87-44 including several sectional
championships in five seasons. Schmotzer was inducted into the Trinity High
School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.
In 1980, Schmotzer hit the college coaching ranks as Assistant Coach for the
Texas Christian University baseball squad. At TCU, Schmotzer helped guide teams
that set school records for wins in a season and consecutive win streak.
Schmotzer spent 10 seasons as the top assistant with TCU, a time span in which
he coached numerous nationally ranked teams and sent over 45 of his players into
professional baseball.
During the summer of 1997, Schmotzer coached "Team America" to an
8-1 record in an international tournament in the Czech Republic. Team America
also conducted clinics and played in exhibition games in Germany and Austria.
The author of two collegiate baseball magazine articles, Schmotzer also has
served as an instructional clinician at over 30 baseball conventions and clinics
throughout the states of Texas, Ohio, Kentucky and South Carolina. Schmotzer
also conducts his own baseball skills and drills camps throughout South
Carolina.
Schmotzer, a 25-year veteran of baseball coaching, has spent 11 seasons as
head coach. With nearly 400 victories to his credit, Schmotzer ranks among the
NCAA’s top-50 winningest coaches all-time.
