Coker Swept 3-0

HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker ran into a talented St. Andrews team Thursday night and came out on the wrong end of a 3-0 decision in collegiate volleyball.  The Cobras fall to 5-8 on the year and 2-5 in the CVAC, while the Knights improve to 8-5 and a perfect 7-0 in conference.

The Knights operated with precision in the opening set, mixing their serves and attack with both strength and placement to ease their way to a 30-18 win.  The Cobras rode the hot hand of junior Andrea Manuel/Spartanburg, SC to a fast start in the second set but St. Andrews came back to grab their first lead at 15-14.  The teams went back and forth to 25-25 but the Knights ran off the last five points to end it.

In the final set Coker didn’t go easily but St. Andrews kept grinding and eventually pulled away for the 30-23 win.  When CC pulled within one at 11-10, the Knights called time out and then went on a 10-2 run to erase any doubt.

Manuel led with 11 kills and 13 digs and freshman Megan Haupt/Summerville, SC contributed 10 kills.  Freshman Margaret Madison/Savannah, GA had nine kills and two blocks and setter Tara Nelson/Rochester Hills, MI finished with 30 assists and 20 digs.

Nicolit Bateman led all hitters with 15 kills and Jessica Bewley finished with 10 kills and three block assists.  Tirzah Armenta had 11 digs and eight kills and setter Kim Harper tallied 42 assists and seven digs.

Coker gets a bit of a break now until the team travels to Columbia College on Tuesday, October 5, for a 6:30 match with the Fighting Koalas.
