Coker Falls 3-0 To Barton
HARTSVILLE, SC - Coker took a frustrating 3-0 loss from its match with Barton College Tuesday evening in women’s collegiate volleyball. The Cobras started off with promise but got into a funk and couldn’t recover. Coker falls to 5-7 on the year and 2-4 in the CVAC, while the Bulldogs improve to 8-10 and 3-6 in conference.
The Cobras hurt themselves with another late set lapse and lost 30-28 in the first set. CC held a 27-26 lead but Barton scored three straight to grab a 29-27 lead and took the set on a kill by Keaunna Vinson.
The disappointment of dropping the first set carried over into the second as the Bulldogs rolled to a large early lead. Coker began to make a run midway through the game and pulled back within four points at 19-15. However, a receiving error and a BC block ended the rally and sent Barton on its way to a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs started to pull away from CC midway through the third set when consecutive well-placed kills by Kelly Lamotta gave the visitors a 19-14 lead. The Cobras battled back to tie the match 19-19 behind the jump serving of Andrea Manuel but a player substitution error ended the rally and gave BC a 22-20 lead. Coker rallied to tie the match again, but Barton rattled off the next six points to shut the door on their hosts.
Freshman Megan Haupt/Summerville, SC led with 11 kills and Manuel finished with nine kills, 17 digs and three aces. Sophomore Lauren Larsen/St. Croix, USVI finished with six kills and three solo blocks, and classmate Tara Nelson/Rochester Hills, MI totaled 31 assists five kills and 12 digs.
Lamotta led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and Vinson had 12 kills, six blocks, and 10 digs. Tawnya Harper finished with 13 kills and four blocks, Kari Poling picked up 41 assists, and Laurie Alpert totaled a match-best 20 digs.
Coker will try to snap a four-game skid this Thursday in a visit from St. Andrews Presbyterian College. Match time is scheduled for 6:30 PM in Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.
