Coker Earns 3-2 Win Over Anderson
HARTSVILLE, SC – Coker pulled out an exhilarating five set win over Anderson College Friday night in women’s volleyball. The Cobras now stand at 13-11 overall and 5-7 in the CVAC, while AC falls to 18-9, 6-5 in conference.
Coker got off to a great start and stayed out in front for most of game one. When Anderson made a run to get close midway through but CC answered and pulled away for a 30-20 win.
The Cobras jumped ahead again in the second game to lead 18-12, but the Trojans made another late run to tie the score at 26-26 and then lead 29-27. CC got a side out to pull within one but then served the ball out of bounds and fell 30-28.
Anderson continued its run at the start of the third game and forced coach Chuck Mullen to call a timeout with CC trailing 6-2. Coker slowly pulled out of its funk and, with better blocking and passing, evened the score at 17-17. The Trojans increased the pressure again with outstanding serving to take a 30-24 victory.
The Cobras stayed close in the early stages of game four but just when Anderson appeared to be pulling away CC came back to take an 18-17 lead. The teams went to a 20-20 tie but Coker ran off three straight and held off the Trojans to win 30-26.
In the decisive fifth game AC broke a 7-7 tie with a big block from Shaunte Heyward to lead 8-7 at the turn. CC inched in front 12-9 behind the serving of freshman Natalie Schembra/Hilton Head, SC but a Anderson timeout sparked the visitors back to trail 12-11. Coker stepped up to the challenge one more time, however, and rattled off the last three points for a 15-11 game and match win.
Junior Andrea Manuel/Spartanburg, SC led a balanced offensive attack with 15 kills and sophomore Tara Nelson/Rochester Hills, MI ran the offense with 50 assists, 20 digs and four kills. Freshman Margaret Madison/Savannah, GA pounded out 15 kills and seven blocks and classmate Jessica Norton/Rochester, MI added another 12 kills. Freshman Megan Haupt/Summerville, SC contributed 11 kills and sophomore Lauren Larsen/St. Croix, USVI had 10 kills and three blocks.
Coker takes the court again Saturday, October 23 for a 4:30 PM match against Lees-McRae.
