Cobras Shoot Their Way To Big Victory
Hartsville, SC – Coker College used a big second half to pull away for a 99-84 victory over the visiting St. Andrews Knights Tuesday evening in women’s collegiate basketball. The Cobras broke open what had been a tight ball game by shooting a blistering 62 percent from the field in the second half. Coker improves to 7-8 on the year and 5-4 in the conference, while St. Andrews drops to 4-11 and 2-6 in the CVAC.
The two squads battled back and forth in the opening 20 minutes while both shooting over 45 percent in the half. At the break four players had already reached double-digit scoring, led by the Knights Sonya Potter, who scored 15 points on 7-7 shooting.
Coker began to pull away with a decisive run midway through the second half. Leading the charge was junior Shamae Hemingway, who scored 19 of her career-high 30 points after the break. Hemingway rebounded from a poor outing on Saturday by shooting 14-17 from the field and grabbing eight rebounds.
St. Andrews remained hot in the second half, shooting 52 percent from the floor, but the Cobras were able to break it open by controlling the boards. Coker out-rebounded the Knights 50-27, including 18 offensive rebounds for 24 second chance points.
Junior Leanne Chandler broke out with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and classmate Selena Davis followed her with 17 markers. Freshman Justina Dakins also recorded a double-double, with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals.
Potter led St. Andrews with 23 points on an amazing 10-11 shooting. Erin Fournier scored 19 points and Quita Currie finished with 11 points and three assists. Dameka Mundy also reached double figures with 10 points, while grabbing five rebounds.
The Cobras are home again this Friday, January 31, at 5:30 PM. Coker welcomes Limestone College to Hartsville for an unusual Friday night double-header with the men.
