Coker Wins Second Straight
Charlotte, NC – Coker College earned its second consecutive conference victory 62-60 Saturday afternoon at Queens University in women’s collegiate basketball. The Cobras held off numerous assaults on their lead in the second half to pick up a big road victory. Coker improves to 4-6 and 2-2 in the CVAC, while the Royals drop to 4-5, 2-2 in the conference.
Coker maintained a slim lead for most of the game and answered the call every time the Royals made a run. CC led 32-27 at the half behind another solid rebounding performance and stout defense. Coker owned a 26-16 advantage on the boards in the first half and limited Queens, on most possessions, to one shot each time down the floor.
After struggling from behind the arc in the first period, the Cobras found their range after the break behind the hot shooting of freshman Justina Dakins. Dakins drilled the first of four second-half three pointers to open the period and Coker never looked back. The closest Queens was able to get was within one point, on a three pointer with six seconds to play.
Junior Shamae Hemingway led CC with 18 points and 10 boards on 50 percent shooting. Dakins connected for 17 points, six rebounds, and four steals, while junior Leanne Chandler tallied 13 points and nine rebounds.
Point guards Sarah Dorsch and Cecily Shipmon did an outstanding job guiding the Cobras offense, combining for 11 assists and only two turnovers. Coker held a 44-35 advantage on the boards and forced 15 steals and 17 turnovers by the Royals.
Leslie Olson led Queens with 15 points and six rebounds before fouling out. Kellie Joplin totaled 14 points and six rebounds and Sarah Newman scored 12 points in the loss.
The Cobras, who have already bettered last year’s win total, will next face Mount Olive this Thursday, January 16, at 5:30 PM in Hartsville.
