Falcons Down Coker
Hartsville, SC – Coker College battled a strong Pfeiffer University team Monday night but came up just short in a 64-56 defeat at home in women’s collegiate basketball. The Falcons, who’d previously beaten nationally ranked Catawba College, used a late run to distance themselves from the scrappy Cobras. Coker falls to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the CVAC, while the Falcons improve to 3-1, 1-0 in the conference.
The Cobras came out in the first half and announced they were up for the challenge by running out to a 28-24 lead at the break. Pfeiffer capitalized on 15 trips to the foul line in the second period and knocked down three three-pointers after hitting only 1-9 from behind the arc in the first half. Coker continued to hit the boards hard and out-rebounded the Falcons 42-34.
Junior Leanne Chandler led CC with 14 points and six rebounds. Classmate Shamae Hemingway connected for 11 points and eight rebounds and junior Selena Davis finished with nine points. Freshman Ashley White turned in her best performance of the year with eight points.
Coker defended the Falcons leading scorer, Shannon Reid, well and held her to eight points in the game. Frontcourt mates Emily Goad and Amanda Joplin picked up the slack, however, and finished with 17 and 16 points respectively.
The Cobras continue conference play this weekend with a home game on Saturday, December 7, against Lees-McRae at 4:00 PM.
